The Government of Canada is currently accepting submissions for the 2026 budget, presenting a timely and strategic opportunity for municipalities, nonprofits and advocacy organizations to influence the direction of federal investments. With growing pressure to balance fiscal responsibility and public demand for stronger affordability, housing, healthcare and infrastructure; this upcoming years budget consultation process offers a meaningful opportunity to inform federal
decision-makers.
For organizations that deliver essential services or advocate on behalf of vulnerable populations, participating in this budget process could open doors of opportunity. It can allow you to directly step up and help shape national or local priorities by highlighting what is working at the local level and what needs to be targeted or supported.
Why does this matter?
The federal budget reflects national priorities. While fiscal constraints in political priorities are always factors, public submissions have played a meaningful role in shaping program design, funding decisions and policy direction. Whether it's municipal infrastructure or community-based health services, local input continues to influence how federal resources are allocated. However, this is not an easy route to take, as this process consists of persistence, research and time just to get a meeting for your voices to be heard.
How can you effectively engage so your voice can be heard?
Firstly, submitting a written brief to bring forward is important. The Department of Finance is accepting briefs up until August 28th, 2025. A strong brief submission should include the following:
→ Clearly describe your organization's mission and community impact.
→ Define the problem you seek to address present policy or funding recommendations.
→ Align with federal goals such as climate resilience, innovation, social equity, or whatever aligns with your problem.
→ Include estimated costs, where applicable.
Secondly, demonstrating community support, is what proves that this issue at hand is big for so many people. By gathering letters of support, survey data, or testimonials from service users, residents or partners is very important. By gathering stories and statistics this will offer a powerful and people centred evidence that you need to back your case.
Once all your information has been gathered, its then time to meet with your local MP, as they can add traction. Members of parliament can elevate your proposal within party and committee structures. Come prepared with a concise 1 pager linking your proposal to community needs and federal priorities. Make sure to be using your support recommendations with metrics like polling, program outcomes or case studies, since this can reflect both effectiveness and demand to your MP.
The 2026 budget is still in development, so the time is to act now. By submitting a well prepared, community backed submission can influence how policies and investments are being shaped. So, starting now is important and at SWON Public Affairs, we specialize in helping clients navigate government process is with precision to make an impact.
